LOS ANGELES -- The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team held a 16-4 shot advantage, but couldn't overcome an early goal by Cal State L.A. in Thursday's 1-0 loss at University Stadium in Los Angeles.
The Broncos fall to 5-9-3 overall and 1-7-3 in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles captured the sixth and final CCAA Women's Soccer Tournament berth with the victory, improving to 5-4-2 in conference action (9-5-2 overall).
Cal Poly Pomona controlled the pace throughout the entire contest, outshooting the hosts 10-2 in the first half, then 6-2 in the second half. The first two shots of the match came off the foot of a CPP player, the first by
Aline Graham that was saved by CSULA's Adriana Maldonado at 3:06, followed by a shot by
Ally LaCarra-Platt that went wide at 7:28. The Golden Eagles got their first shot off the crossbar at 10:01, then CPP raced down for a shot by
Allyssa Larkin, also saved by Maldonado, but less than three minutes later, CSULA broke the scoreless tie with a goal by Kimberly Surio in the 14th minute.
The hosts only managed to get two more shots off in the remaining 76 minutes while CPP attempted 13, but none would find the net. Maldonado made eight saves for the Golden Eagles while the Broncos'
Sydney Williams made one save.
Cal Poly Pomona will wrap up the 2018 season Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Start time is set for 11:30 am.
