Broncos Slip Past TexAnns In OT, 82-70

POMONA -- Crystal Malveaux dropped in a game-high 21 points and secured a double-double with 10 rebounds, and Jordyn Shane chipped in with 18 points, five rebounds, four steals and four assists as the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team rallied in the second half to force overtime before running away with an 82-70 victory over visiting Tarleton State on Saturday afternoon at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.

The Broncos, who faced head coach Danelle Bishop's alma mater and former teammate and head coach of the TexAnns, Misty Wilson, rose to 2-1 this season.  Tarleton State suffered its first loss of the year, dropping to 3-1.

Cal Poly Pomona got off to a slow start in the contest, falling behind 21-15 after the opening 10 minutes of the contest before Tarleton State stretched their lead to as much as 13 points with 3:50 to play in the second quarter.  However, the Broncos went on an 18-5 run over the next seven minutes of game play to erase the deficit and force a 40-40 tie with 6:46 left in the third period.

The two teams went back and forth the rest of the way, changing leads eight times and tying 10 times.  The final tie of the game came with 1:10 left in regulation when Malveaux scored a layup in transition to knot the score at 67-67.  Tarleton went down the floor on their next possession and missed a three-point attempt, giving the ball back to CPP with 50 ticks left.  Shane missed an attempt at the end of the 30-second shot clock, but Kasey Smit corralled the rebound and the Broncos called a timeout to reset the offense.  Out of the time out, Cal Poly Pomona let the time run down and Dominique Dotson took the potential game-winning shot just before the buzzer, but her attempt rimmed off and the game went to overtime.

In the extra period, the Broncos got hot and scored the first 11 points of the frame, not allowing a Tarleton State score until 1:40 was left on the game clock, en route to the 12-point win for the hosts.  CPP ended the game on a 21-5 run over the final 8:06 while Tarleton State finished the game going 1 for 12 from the floor.  The TexAnns also missed 14 of their last 15 three-point attempts on the day.

Smit turned in 12 points for Cal Poly Pomona while Rebecca Islas had 10 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.

Cal Poly Pomona will hit the road for the next month, beginning with a contest against Concordia-Irvine in Irvine on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.  The Broncos won't play another home game until December 15th when they host Central Washington for a 2:00 pm matinee.
