LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Gabriel Castillo buried his first collegiate goal in the 62nd minute and it would hold up as the game-winner, lifting the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team to a nailbiting 1-0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino Friday night in the CCAA semifinal at Triton Soccer Stadium in La Jolla.
The Broncos (13-5) advance to the CCAA final on Sunday at 2:00 pm, setting up a rematch of last year's championship match between CPP and Cal State L.A.. The Golden Eagles edged Chico State in the final seconds of double overtime in the first semifinal of the day Friday in La Jolla.
CPP narrowly outshot CSUSB in each half, 7-6 in the first and 9-7 in the second, and it was one of the nine shots in the second half that Castillo capitalized on. It began with a beautiful cross from
Omer Green that found Castillo streaking in just before he knocked it into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Both teams had their chances to either extend the lead or find the equalizer, but neither would happen as both goalkeepers, CPP's
Jakob Hansen and CSUSB's Jacob Huber, made four huge saves in the game.
