Track & Field Announces Wave of Winter Recruits

POMONA – Head Coach Chris Bradford announced the signing of seven new recruits joining the Cal Poly Pomona men's and women's track & field teams, heading into the start of the 2018 season.
 
"I am very excited to bring in each of these quality athletes and people to our program for the 2018 season and beyond. I believe they will come in immediately and fill some needs on our team and help our program reach the goals we have set out for them. Our coaches have done a great job of finding and recruiting quality athletes who fit our standards and I look forward to seeing the great things they will help them accomplish for the Broncos."
 
Bradford begins his first track & field season at the helm with CPP after being appointed in July of last summer and will look to continue to Broncos' success from last year, making an appearance at the 2017 NCAA National Championships.
 
2018 Winter Recruiting Class:
Giselle Burgos I Junior I Pico Rivera, CA I Cerritos CC
Personal Records: 400-Meter Hurdles – 1:06.96, Heptathlon – 3779 points
 
Burgos was named her team's most valuable player her final two years of high school while competing at El Rancho High. At Cerritos, she was named most improved performer in the sport of cross country.
 
Coach Sara Macey on Burgos: "I am thrilled to have Giselle be another impact athlete we are able to bring in from Cerritos Community College. While at Cerritos she competed in the heptathlon, 400m hurdles and in her last season ran cross country for the school. I believe Giselle is coming to us with some good attributes that will help our team grow and improve throughout the season."
 
 
Diamond Scott I Junior I Moreno Valley, CA I Riverside CC
Personal Records: Javelin – 35.08m, Heptathlon – 3743 points
 
Scott competed at Vista Del Lago High School before beginning her collegiate career at Riverside Community College.
 
Coach Macey on Scott: "Diamond comes to us from a great program at Riverside Community College, I look forward to having the opportunity to help her build off her current abilities to not only succeed individually but also succeed with the team later in the season."
 
 
Taariq Chestnut-Davis I Junior I Richmond, CA I Modesto JC
Personal Records: 100-meter – 11.07s, 200-meter – 22.62s
 
Chestnut-Davis has had a strong start to his collegiate career, being named an All-American while at Modesto Junior college. While competing at East Union High School, he helped set the program record in the 4x100-meter relay which he still holds.
 
Coach Darrell Smith on Chestnut-Davis: "Taariq brings a needed presence to our sprint core. He gives us depth and talent in the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay. He comes in as a conference level athlete, and he wants to work his way to reaching nationals.  
 
 
Shane Martin I Junior I Chula Vista, CA I Mississippi Valley State
Personal Records: 110-meter hurdles – 14.19s, Long Jump - 6.78m
 
Martin helped lead his team to a second-place finish at the Southwestern Athletic Conference championships. He also holds a number of school records at Eastlake High School.
 
Coach Smith on Shane: "I am extremely pleased that an athlete of Shane's caliber has joined the Bronco family. He comes in with national experience, and we will build on that, individually and as a team. With more athletes of Shane's caliber, we will reach the levels Coach Bradford has set out for the team."
 
 
 
Alejandro Sandoval-Guzman I Junior I Fontana, CA I Mt. San Antonio College
Personal Records: Discus – 46.39m, Shot – 14.13m
 
Sandoval-Guzman served as his team captain while at Mt. SAC. At Summit High School, he earned a league championship for his performance in the shot put.
 
Coach Bradford on Alejandro: "Alex is a great addition to our throwing group this year. He comes from a great program at Mt SAC, and should immediately add to our quality groups in the discus and shot put."
 
 
Alex Savage I Freshman I Vancouver, British Columbia I Walnut Grove HS
Personal Records: Long Jump – 7.10m
 
Savage was a two-time champion in the long jump during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
 
Coach Macey on Alexander: "I am extremely excited to have Alex join our Bronco squad and jumps crew as a long jumper. He is coming to us with experience at the Canadian U20 National level. Alex hopes to continue to grow and improve upon his abilities to continue competing at the national level here at Cal Poly Pomona as well as in Canada. Coach Bradford and I hope to help him build to that and more."
 
 
Matthew Velasco I Junior I Los Angeles, CA I Glendale CC       
Personal Records: Javelin – 50.43m
 
While at Glendale, Velasco earned second-place in the javelin at the Southern California Regional Championships.
 
Coach Bradford on Velasco: "Matt is a great kid and fills a huge need for us in the Javelin. He comes to us from a solid background at Glendale CC, and we think he can make an immediate impact on our program."
