Broncos Hold Off Seawolves in 65-59 Victory

POMONA - Looking to clinch a home playoff game, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team got one step closer, defeating Sonoma State 65-59 at Kellogg Arena on Friday night.


THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
-    Both teams started out even in the first quarter, playing to an 18-18 tie with less than a minute to go before layups by Alyssa Benton and Jordyn Shane gave the Broncos an early 22-18 lead.
-    As the game continued, neither team could gain a real edge over the other, ending the first half tied 30-30.
-    The Broncos won the turnover battle, 13-22 while Sonoma State finished with a shooting percentage of 51 percent compared to 33 percent from CPP.
-    Sonoma State built a five-point lead to start the second half before the Broncos used a 13-4 run to take back momentum heading into the final quarter.
-    The difference came at the free throw line as the Broncos managed to shoot 28-of-32 from the line compared to only 7-of-9 from the Seawolves.
-    With only a two-point lead for the Broncos in the final seconds, Priscilla Brooks grabbed an offensive rebound for the put back to seal the victory for CPP.

KEY PERFORMERS: 
-    Brooks led the way for the Broncos with 16 points along with two steals and three rebounds.
-    Jackie Ricketson finished with 12 points and six rebounds while Chelsea Waddy-Blow contributed 11 points and Benton tallied six rebounds along with nine points for CPP.

OUTSIDE THE BOX: 
-    With the win, the Broncos secure their second-place spot in the CCAA standings as they look to break away from Humboldt State who is set to play UC San Diego tomorrow night.
-    Brooks tallied her 16th game this season with double-digit scoring as she averages 10.6 points this season.

The Broncos continue their final regular-season homestand tomorrow night as they host San Francisco State University at Kellogg Arena with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
