Broncos Split Doubleheader with 15-1 Victory in Game Two

POMONA - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team split their final two games with Cal State San Marcos, losing the first game of Sunday's doubleheader 6-5 before routing the Cougars in game two to take the series.


THE BASICS:
Game One: Cal Poly Pomona 5, Cal State San Marcos 6

GAME ONE:
HOW IT HAPPENED:

-    After three scoreless innings for both teams, the Broncos broke the streak in the fourth inning as Bryce Graddy tripled to right center, bringing in Cody Martin to take an early 1-0 lead.
-    CPP quickly saw their lead disappear as the Cougars bounced back in the fifth, scoring two runs after a solo home run followed by an error by the Broncos.
-    San Marcos scored two more runs in the sixth inning and again in the seventh inning to take a 6-1 lead.
-    The Broncos had a little fight left as they tallied four runs in the eighth inning to close the gap. Nic Hernandez scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch followed by a sacrifice fly from Patrick Vizcaino, a single from Jacob Bernardy and finally a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
-    CSUSM quieted the Broncos in the ninth inning, picking up the win with three straight outs.

KEY PERFORMERS: 
-    Bernardy led the Broncos at the plate, finishing with three total hits while Braddy and Martin both tallied two hits in the contest.
-    Dylan Francis tossed 5.1 innings, allowing only five hits while tallying six strikeouts.
-    Tim Holdgrafer pitched 2.2 innings in relief, giving up five hits with two strikeouts.


GAME TWO:
HOW IT HAPPENED:

-    The bats came alive for the Broncos in game two of the double header as they tallied 20 total hits.
-    After the first inning, both teams earned one run before the Broncos took the lead 3-1 with two runs in the second inning.
-    The Broncos pitched six scoreless innings while the offense continued to pour on runs.
-    In the fifth inning, CPP took a commanding lead after scoring eight total runs for their most productive inning of the season. The Broncos scored the first run on a bases-loaded walk before three singles and an error contributed to the remaining runs.
-    The Broncos added three more insurance runs in the remaining two innings to win the series against the Cougars 3-1.

KEY PERFORMERS: 
-    Michael Gomez (1-1) picked up the win for CPP has he tossed six innings with only four hits while totaling 10 strikeouts.
-    McKenzie, Graddy and Bernardy all tallied three hits in the game while Bernardy finished with a team high three RBIs.
-    Nine CPP players earned at least one RBI in the game.

COMING UP NEXT:
The Broncos continue CCAA action next week, starting on the road for two games at UC San Diego beginning Thursday, Mar. 1, before closing the series out with a doubleheader at Scolinos Field on Saturday.
