Broncos Earn Series Sweep with 18-3 Rout of San Bernardino

POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team completed the series sweep over Cal State San Bernardino in a big way, winning game four 18-3 on the road on Sunday afternoon.

GAME SUMMARY:
  • The Broncos scored early and often on Sunday as Sean Grebeck started things in the second inning, hitting a groundout to second base for the first RBI of the day. Cesar Lopez added another RBI in the second inning with a liner to right field as the Broncos went up 2-0.
  • Cody Martin scored the lone run in the fourth inning as he singled towards second base, Bryce Graddy in the process.
  • CPP ran away with the game in the fifth inning, tallying six runs off of five hits. Bryce Etchandy started the inning with a single before a triple by Drew Cowley sent him home. Matt Manskar grounded out to score Cowley as the Broncos held a 5-0 lead with two outs in the inning.
  • The scoring continued in the fifth as Graddy doubled and Grebeck walked, advancing to third on a wild pitch. The inning was capped off with an RBI single by Martin before a two-run homer by Lopez gave CPP a 9-0 advantage.
  • The Broncos continued to add to their lead, scoring two runs off an error in the sixth before a single by Grebeck added another run.
  • San Bernardino did their damage in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a two-RBI single before a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch made it 12-3.
  • CPP continued to score, adding two runs in the seventh, one in the eighth and three in the ninth, finishing with their highest total of the season.
  • The Broncos tallied 16 hits and forced six walks.
 
KEY PERFORMERS:
  • Lopez led the Broncos with four RBIs, finishing with three hits in the game.
  • Tallying two RBIs were Martin, Cowley, Grebeck and Nick Peifer,
  • Michael Gomez picked up his second win of the season as he improves to 2-2 on the year. He tossed five scoreless innings with only three hits and six strikeouts.
 
COMING UP NEXT:
The Broncos go on the road for the next series, traveling to San Francisco State for their first battle with the northern schools beginning on Friday, March 23.
