POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader against Chico State, winning game one 6-3 before dropping a pitcher's duel in game two, losing 1-0 at Scolinos Field.

GAME ONE:
GAME SUMMARY:
- It didn't take long for the Broncos to score their first run of the day as Nic Hernandez grounded out into a double play in the bottom of the first inning, allowing Matt Manskar to cross home plate.
- In the top of the third inning, Chico State found the lead after hitting a ball over the left field wall to take a 2-1 lead over CPP.
- The Broncos answered back immediately in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs to go up 5-2. Cesar Lopez, Brennan McKenzie and Bryce Graddy each hit back-to-back-to-back RBI singles before a sacrifice fly to center field by Logan Gopperton brought in the final run of the inning.
- The Wildcats took one run back in the fourth, hitting a ball through the left side of the field to make the score 5-2.
- CPP added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Manskar singled through the left side gap, scoring Gopperton from second base.
KEY PERFORMERS:
- Manskar and Cowley each finished with three hits to lead the Broncos at the plate while Manskar added one RBI and two runs on the day.
- Also turning in multiple hit performances were Gopperton who had one RBI and Bernardy.
- Starting on the mound was Dylan Francis who picked up the win for the Broncos, tossing six innings in which he allowed three runs off of seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk. He improves his season record to 4-3 overall.
- Pitching three innings of relief and earning his second save of the year was Michael Gomez who gave up four hits in three innings with two strikeouts.
GAME TWO:
GAME SUMMARY:
- Offense was hard to come by for both teams in game two of the doubleheader as it began as a pitcher's duel with neither team scoring through four innings of play.
- Chico State scored the only run of the contest, singling over third base to get a man on before the runner advanced to third on an errant pick-off attempt, eventually scoring on a single up the middle.
- With two outs already in the final inning, Brennan McKenzie hit a floater to right center, breaking the no hitter and giving hope with a runner on base. Pinch running for McKenzie was Sean Grebeck who advanced to second base on an error.
- With two on the Broncos couldn't bring a runner home, ending the game on a seven-pitch strikeout.
KEY PERFORMERS:
- Despite a great outing on the mound, Tim Holdgrafer takes the loss for the Broncos, falling to 3-2 overall on the year. He pitched seven complete innings for the third start in a row, giving up one run off of four hits with six strikeouts.
- Collecting the only hit for the Broncos was McKenzie.
