Broncos Win Wild One vs. Chico to Split Series

POMONA – Scoring came early and often for the Broncos who held on to defeat Chico State 12-10 to split the four-game series against the Wildcats at Scolinos Field.


THE BASICS:

GAME SUMMARY:
-    After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning, the Broncos answered back, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the inning, starting with an RBI triple by Drew Cowley. CPP followed that up with RBI singles by Brennan McKenzie and Alex Kline, an RBI double by Cesar Lopez and a sacrifice fly by Logan Gopperton to go ahead 5-1.
-    Chico cut into the lead the following inning, scoring one run before a two-out single brought in two more runners to make it 5-4.
-    Celebrating Senior Day in a big way, Jacob Bernardy launched a three-run blast over the left field wall in the bottom of the third inning, give CPP an 8-4 advantage.
-    The Wildcats didn't quit, scoring four runs in the sixth inning to tie the game, including a two-RBI double with only one out in the inning.
-    CPP continued to have an answer for Chico State, leading off the bottom of the seventh inning with a base hit by Nic Hernandez. After Lopez reached on an error, Sean Grebeck advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt before an intentional walk for Gopperton loaded the bases. Patrick Flynn forced a walk to score the first run before a floater to left field by Bernardy scored two more runs, with the final coming off a fielding error by Chico's shortstop, giving the Broncos a 12-8 lead.
-    The Wildcats continued to fight, scoring two runs in the eighth. Lopez saved another run from scoring, catching a fly ball with a perfect throw to the plate, allowing Gopperton to tag the runner for the final out of the inning.
-    Brian Conley secured the win for CPP in the ninth, striking out the first batter before getting a popup to second base and a fly out to center field for the final outs of the contest.

KEY PERFORMERS: 
-    Bernardy finished with five RBIs off of two hits while Hernandez tallied three hits in the contest.
-    Gopperton and Lopez each scored twice while the Broncos tallied 11 total hits in the game.
-    Picking up the win was Ben Mora (1-1) who pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up two runs off of three hits. Earning his third save of the year was Conley who allowed two hits with a strikeout in one inning of work.


COMING UP NEXT:
The Broncos will prepare for the final series of the regular season, beginning Thursday, May 3, as they face Cal State Dominguez Hills with the first two games at Scolinos Field before closing with a doubleheader on the road.
