Villalobos Buries Golden Goal To Beat NDNU

POMONA -- Jimmie Villalobos buried his second golden goal of the season to give the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team a thrilling 2-1 victory in overtime Saturday night over visiting Notre Dame de Namur at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.  The Broncos (2-3-0) have won both of their games this year in extra time, both ending with Villalobos' heroics.  The Argonauts fell to 1-5-0.

Though CPP found themselves trailing early after surrendering a goal in the 22nd minute, the Broncos pummeled the NDNU defense with 17 shot attempts in the first half.  The 17th shot proved to be successful when Nadeer Ghantous headed in a corner kick from Patricio Yrizar in the 41st minute to knot the score at 1-1 entering halftime.

In the second half, Cal Poly Pomona outshot Notre Dame de Namur 5-4, but none of the nine combined shots found the back of the net, forcing overtime.  At 94:27 was when Villalobos struck gold, firing a shot just underneath the crossbar for the game-winner.

In the end, CPP enjoyed a 24-7 shot advantage, in addition to a 7-0 margin on corner kicks.  Jakob Hansen made three saves in the victory for the Broncos.  NDNU's Javier Santana made six stops on the other end of the pitch.

Cal Poly Pomona will get the conference schedule underway Wednesday when it travels to Cal State San Bernardino for a 3:00 pm kick.
