POMONA -- After falling behind 2-1 early in the second half, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team responded with three unanswered goals to earn a convincing 4-2 victory over visiting Stanislaus State on Friday evening at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona. Winner in three out of their last four matches, the Broncos rise to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA. The Warriors stumbled to 3-6 (0-5 CCAA).
Jimmie Villalobos got the scoring started with his fifth goal of the season at 27:01 when he bent a shot from 20 yards out that found the upper right corner of the net to put the hosts up 1-0. Stanislaus State's Sean Bender headed in a loose ball right in front of the net a minute and a half before the intermission to knot the score at 1-1. Six minutes out of the halftime period, the Warriors' Ryan Kane corralled a rebound off a missed shot from teammate Joseph Mayorca and sent it home to quiet the Kellogg crowd with a 2-1 lead by the visitors with 40 minutes to go in regulation.
In the 61st minute,
Sergio Martinez netted his first goal of the year when he took a pass from
Alon Grod and buried his 20-yard shot into the upper left corner of the net to give the Broncos a much-needed jolt of energy. Tied at 2-2, Villalobos struck again, heading in a cross from Ori Kennett at 76:38 for the go-ahead score at 3-2. Just 35 seconds later,
Patricio Yrizar netted his first goal of the season on an assist from
Gabriel Castillo for the 4-2 lead and eventual win.
The Broncos outshot the Warriors 26-13, including a 15-3 margin in the first half. CPP's
Jakob Hansen made four saves as Stanislaus' Edgar Benitez made five.
Cal Poly Pomona will return to action Sunday when it hosts Chico State in Kellogg Stadium at 2:00 pm.
