POMONA -- Cyro Oliveira connected on a penalty kick in the 85th minute to give the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team a narrow 1-0 victory over visiting Chico State Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.
With the victory, the Broncos (5-4-0 overall) move into a three-way tie for third place in the CCAA standings with nine points (3-1-0). The Wildcats remain in second place at 4-2-0 in conference action (6-3-1 overall).
It was a statistical tale of two halves with CPP leading 7-1 in shots in the first half and Chico holding a 7-3 shot advantage in the second half. Neither team could come up with the score to break the tie until Oliveira was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick at 84:07. Oliveira stepped up and fired a shot low and to the right as Wildcat goalkeeper Damion Lewis fell the other way, sending Oliveira and his teammates into a frenzy on the far sideline.
Chico managed to take two shots in the final five minutes, one was saved by CPP's
Jakob Hansen, the other sailed wide left as the host Broncos held on to upset the Wildcats.
Cal Poly Pomona will head to Northern California next weekend, playing at Sonoma State Friday (12:30 pm) followed by a Sunday matchup at Humboldt State (2:00 pm).
