Defense Shines In Victory At Cal State LA

LOS ANGELES -- Four players scored in double-figures for the second straight game, led by the 17 points from Dominique Dotson, as the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team again held an opponent to a below-average shooting effort from the hardwood to capture a convincing 74-58 victory over host Cal State L.A. on Saturday at University Gym in Los Angeles.

The Broncos have now won seven straight games, rising to 14-2 overall and 10-1 in the CCAA.  The Golden Eagles fell to 6-10 (3-9 CCAA).

While many of the statistical categories were relatively even across the board, it was the shooting efficiency that proved to be one of the deciding factors in the outcome.  The Broncos offense shot 47.4 percent on 27 of 57 from the floor while the defense held the Golden Eagles to just 31.3 percent on 21 of 67.

CPP led for all but 1:12, with 39 of those seconds featuring a tie at 25-25 with 5:33 to go in the second quarter. Over the next four minutes, the Broncos went on a 10-0 run, eventually going into the halftime break with an eight-point lead.

The Broncos extended their lead to double-digits and it remained that way for the majority of the contest before ending the game on a 10-2 run over the final 3:31 to put the game away.

Dotson joined Jordyn Shane (15 points), Kasey Smit (14 points) and Rebecca Islas (12 points) as the four CPP players with 10 or more points in the ballgame.  Smit also had team-highs of eight rebounds, five assists, and four blocks in 35 minutes of action.

The Golden Eagles were led by Chiderah Uzowuru who dropped in 22 points.

Cal Poly Pomona returns to Kellogg Arena for a Thursday night showdown with Sonoma State.  Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
