POMONA -- The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team used a balanced effort on both sides of the floor to defeat visiting San Francisco State, 71-62, in a nationally-televised game Saturday afternoon at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.
The Broncos won their ninth straight contest, improving to 16-2 overall and 12-1 in the CCAA. The Gators fall to 8-10 (7-6 CCAA).
In a game televised live on ESPN3, the Broncos got five players scoring in double-figures led by the 18 points from
Dominique Dotson.
Monica Todd secured her third double-double effort of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds, adding four steals, both
Jordyn Shane and
Kasey Smit chipped in with 11 apiece and
Lauryn Catching matched her season-high of 10 points off the bench against her former team.
Though CPP ran away late with the nine-point victory, the Broncos and Gators fought through four ties and 18 lead changes. SF State did hold a 41-36 advantage with 6:24 to play in the third period, but over the next 13 minutes of game time, Cal Poly Pomona went on a 29-13 run to take their largest lead of the day at 11 points (65-54) with 3:20 left in the contest before settling for the 71-62 win.
JJ Stephens led the Gators with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Cal Poly Pomona will hit the road for a brief two-game roadtrip to the Bay Area next weekend, taking on Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside on Thursday (5:30 pm) before facing Cal State East Bay Saturday (1:00 pm).
