CHICO, Calif. -- Jimmie Villalobos, the reigning CCAA Payer of the Week, came up clutch yet again, scoring the game-winner in the 86th minute to break a scoreless tie in lifting the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over host Chico State Friday night at University Soccer Stadium in Chico.
With the win, the Broncos (4-3-2 overall, 3-0-1 CCAA) take sole possession of first place in the conference standings with 10 points, one point ahead of six other teams tied in second place with nine points. The Wildcats are one of those six teams tied in second place as they fell to 7-2-0 overall and 3-1 in CCAA action. CPP also snapped Chico's 10-match home win streak in the process.
It was scoreless until 85:19 when
Eduardo Faria delivered a pass into the near post where Villalobos was waiting to head it into the back of the net for the score. The teams combined for just 14 shots in the contest with the Broncos holding the 8-6 edge. None of Chico State's six shots were on target as
Miguel Bayma recorded the shutout between the posts for CPP.
Cal Poly Pomona will end the roadtrip Sunday at Stanislaus State in Turlock (11:30 am) before coming home to play six of their final seven regular season matches at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.
