POMONA -- Despite pummeling UC San Diego in the first set, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss (13-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-11) on Friday night at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.
The Broncos, fall to 4-11 overall (2-6 CCAA) and 0-8 at home this season. The Tritons improve to 11-5 (5-3 CCAA).
In the opening stanza, the Broncos came out firing on all cylinders, just as they did against the Tritons down in La Jolla two weeks ago, taking the 1-0 match lead with a convincing 25-13 win. In that frame, CPP hit .387 with 14 kills with just two errors in 31 attacks while holding UCSD to just .118 (9k-5e-34a).
The second set was much more evenly matched as both teams hit above .350 (CPP at .375 and UCSD at .367). However, UCSD held the upper hand and escaped with a 25-22 win to even the match at 1-1. The third set had an identical score and result despite the Broncos hitting just .136 to the Tritons' .282. In the fourth and deciding set, CPP couldn't find its rhythm, recording just four kills with seven errors in 22 swings, a hitting percentage of -.136 while UCSD hit at a sizzling .462 to close out the match with a 25-11 blowout.
Wilder led the way with 12 kills, her third straight match with double-digit kills.Â
Daisy Duke matched her season-high with nine kills as both
Jazminn Parrish and
Kaitlan Tucker added eight apiece.Â
Brynn Sherbert notched 16 digs on the backline for CPP.
For UC San Diego, Jessica Rieble led all players with 15 kills while Gina Cortesi added 14.
Cal Poly Pomona returns to the court Saturday at 5:00 pm hosting Cal State San Marcos.
