Golden Eagles Score Golden Goal To Beat CPP

POMONA -- The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team dominated the majority of the afternoon, taking 25 of the 35 shot attempts in the match, but No. 2 Cal State LA scored the game-winner in the 97th minute to break a scoreless tie on Sunday at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.

The Broncos see their seven match unbeaten streak come to an end, falling to 6-4-2 overall and, at 5-1-1 in the CCAA, into a three-way tie for second place with Cal State LA (10-0-1, 5-0-1 CCAA) and Cal State San Bernardino (8-1-2, 5-1-1 CCAA), all with 16 points.  UC San Diego emerges as the leader of the conference standings with 18 points at 6-2 (11-3 overall).

It was an evenly matched contest through the first 45 minutes, though CPP had the 7-6 edge in shots.  It was in the second half that the Broncos turned it up a notch and held a 13-3 advantage in attempts.  In fact, Jordan Jackmon seemed to have scored the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute, but was called offside.  The Broncos also found an elite opportunity to score the golden goal just seconds into the overtime period, as CPP took three shots from point-blank range, but none would find the net.

It was in the 97th minute, and Cal State LA's only shot opportunity in extra time, that the Golden Eagles capitalized on a CPP turnover deep in their own territory with Leonardo Nogueira scoring his first goal of the season to put the game to rest.

Of the 25 shots taken by the Broncos, Jimmie Villalobos took five of them, while Eduardo Faria and Jackmon each had four attempts.  Jordan Aldama made six saves in the loss.

Cal Poly Pomona continues its six-match homestand Friday when it hosts Humboldt State at 3:00 pm.
