POMONA -- After not scoring in his last two contests,
Jimmie Villalobos more than made up for it, netting the 12th hat trick in program history in the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team's 4-0 rout of visiting Humboldt State on Friday afternoon at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.
The Broncos rise to 7-4-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the CCAA. The Lumberjacks fell to 6-7-0 overall (2-6 CCAA).
Not only did Villalobos score three of the four goals in the contest, but he also assisted on the goal in the 60th minute by
Christian Miramontes, who scored his first goal of the season on a scrum in front of the goalmouth.
On a serve upfield by
Estuardo Zecena, Villalobos corralled the pass and fired the 18-yard shot with his left foot past the diving HSU goalkeeper Tab Heinz.
It would be 1-0 in favor of Cal Poly Pomona through the first half of play despite Humboldt State having a 7-5 edge in shots.
The second half would be a much different story as CPP held an 11-4 advantage in shots in the final 45 minutes, including the three goals in the 56th minute by Villalobos, the 60th minute by Miramontes and in the 85th minute, a 35-yard rocket up and over HSU's Heinz.
Cal Poly Pomona returns to play on Sunday at 11:30 am when it hosts San Francisco State at Kellogg Stadium.
