POMONA -- Amanda Duran chipped a shot from 20 yards out on the far sideline up and over the goalkeeper in the 79th minute and it would hold up to be the game winner as the 25th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team captured a 1-0 victory over visiting Humboldt State on a hot Friday afternoon at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.
The Broncos rise to 9-3-2 overall and move into third place in the
CCAA standings with 17 points at 5-1-2. The Lumberjacks fall to 3-8-2 (2-6 CCAA).
It was a one-sided affair from start to finish as CPP outshot Humboldt 15-1 in the contest. There wasn't much action in the first 45 mintues as the Broncos attempted the only four shots in the first half, it was the second half that the hosts came alive. However, it wasn't until 78:36 that the Broncos were able to strike gold when
Jillian Erwin passed a ball from
Taylor Scott out to Duran on the right wing, and Duran sent a ball into the box that slipped through the gloves of HSU goalkeeper Katelin Talbert and into the left side of the net for the 1-0 lead and eventual one-goal victory.
Sydney Williams recorded her seventh shutout of the season without having to make a save. Talbert made six saves on the other end of the pitch for Humboldt State.
Cal Poly Pomona returns to play on Sunday at 2:00 pm when it hosts San Francisco State at Kellogg Stadium.
