SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- Jimmie Villalobos scored in his sixth straight match, knotting the score at 1-1 which would end up being the final score as the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team settled for a tie with Cal State San Marcos on Sunday in San Marcos.
The Broncos move to 3-3-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the CCAA. The Cougars are now 3-5-2 and 1-1-2 in conference action.
After a scoreless first half that saw CSUSM outshoot CPP 11-5, it was the host Cougars to get on the board first. At 51:46, Mauro Rafael sent a pass over to Raul Meza on the right side. A few yards behind the corner of the box, Meza took a shot that hopped once in front of CPP goalkeeper
Miguel Bayma before going into the upper right corner of the goal.
In the 75th minute, Villalobos took a shot from dead center of the box that was saved by CSUSM keeper Matt Escareno. However, Villalobos followed the rebound to the right side and put it into the lower left corner of the goal off his right foot to tie the match at 1-1.
A combined 47 shots were taken between the two teams in the 110-minute contest with Cal State San Marcos holding the 26-21 edge, including 11-5 on goal, but only the two aforementioned attempts ended up finding nylon.
Bayma made 10 saves between the posts for the Broncos while his counterpart, Escareno, made four stops.
Cal Poly Pomona will head north to Chico Friday to face Chico State (7-1, 3-1 CCAA). Kickoff from University Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
