POMONA -- Taylor Scott scored twice in the first 30 minutes and
Jillian Erwin put one in just before halftime, lifting the No. 22 ranked and No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over No. 6 seed Cal State LA in the First Round of the 2019 CCAA Soccer Tournament Tuesday night at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.
The Broncos (13-3-3) advance to the semifinals on Friday in La Jolla against No. 2 seed UC San Diego. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 pm. The Golden Eagles (8-7-1) will await their NCAA postseason fate as they were ranked fifth in the region according to last week's rankings.
Scott scored the first of her two goals at 16:22 after CSULA was called for a handball in the box. Scott buried her penalty kick into the lower left corner of the net, just beyond the outstretched fingers of Golden Eagles goalkeeper Amanda Leal.
Just under 15 minutes later, Scott struck again, chipping a shot above Leal's head that got behind her as Scott was able to juke around her and finish for the 2-0 lead at 30:22.
At the 42:20 mark, Cal State LA was attempting to clear the ball out of their own box, but the ball ricocheted off of
Jazmin Duran's legs and bounced back towards the end line where Erwin was quick to locate and fire a shot into the net to give the Broncos the 3-1 lead.
Cal State LA was able to get a score back in the 65th minute on a goal by Danya Gutierrez, but that would be the extent of the scoring for the contest.
The Broncos outshot the Golden Eagles 13-11 in the game. CPP's
Sydney Williams made seven saves in the victory, while CSULA's Leal made five stops.
