ORANGE, Calif. -- Kasey Smit went for 15 points and eight rebounds as the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team held off Montana State Billings late for a nailbiting 67-65 win on Saturday afternoon at the CCA D2 Tipoff Classic at Santiago Canyon College in Orange.
The Broncos (2-0) have won two straight to open the 2019-20 campaign while the Yellowjackets fall to 0-2.
CPP led in double-digits for the majority of the contest, even stretching their lead out to as much as 21 points at 51-30 with 4:46 left to play in the third quarter, However, MSUB came swarming back and got within a point at 66-65 on a three-pointer by Jeanann Lemelin with 14 seconds remaining in regulation, but
Jackie Ricketson hit one of two free throws in the final moments to seal the win.
Lauryn Catching chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds while both Ricketson and
Jayda Villareal each added 10 points. As a team, the Broncos connected on 23 of 66 shots for 34.8 percent.
Montana State Billings got 29 points and 15 rebounds from Taryn Shelley.
Cal Poly Pomona will wrap up action at the CCA D2 Tipoff Classic on Sunday at 1:00 pm against Simon Fraser.
