POMONA —
Kasey Smit had a career night, scoring 25 points (11-for-21) to help the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team blow past Cal State San Bernardino, 82-57, in Thursday night action to open the CCAA season at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.
The Broncos outscored the Coyotes 45-26 in the second half to improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA. CSUSB drops to 0-4 (0-1 CCAA).
Three other Broncos finished the night in double figures, with
Lauryn Catching and
Sheridan Glover contributing 12 points apiece.
Dominique Dotson added another 11 points, while
Jackie Ricketson led CPP's efforts off the board with 11 rebounds. Smit snagged 10 boards to end the night with a double-double.
The Broncos found themselves trailing by five, 23-18, early in the second quarter, but went on a 14-0 run to shift momentum heavily in the home team's favor. Catching got the scoring spree going with a jumper, before Dotson drained a trey to even the score at 23-23.
CSUSB pulled within two baskets, 35-29, but Glover found Smit just inside the arc to keep some distance between the two teams.
Halway through the third quarter, CPP built a double-digit lead as Glover banked in a shot from Catching.
Leilia Orji created further separation, 51-37, after grabbing an offensive board and scored off the rebound.
The Coyotes cut the deficit to eight points with just under four minutes left in the third, but CPP closed the quarter out on an 8-1 run to have a 15-point cushion, 59-44, heading into the final 10 minutes.
It seemed the Broncos were unstoppable in the fourth, finishing the quarter with an impressive 69.2 shooting percentage.
Smit opened the quarter by scoring on a fastbreak after Ricketson stole the ball away from a Coyote and found Smit on an outlet pass. About a minute later, Ricketson found Orji for a jump shot to put the Broncos in front by 20 points.
CSUSB tried to put together a late rally with five minutes left on the clock, but the Broncos wouldn't have it as they sealed the 82-57 victory on a Catching and-one opportunity with less than a minute left to play.
Cal Poly Pomona continues conference action Saturday, heading to Seaside to take on Cal State Monterey Bay at 1:00 p.m.
