POMONA -- The 22nd-ranked Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay on Senior Day at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona on Sunday.
The Broncos (12-3-2 overall) remain in third place in the CCAA standings at 8-1-2, setting up a big showdown on Wednesday with conference-leader Sonoma State (13-2-0, 9-0 CCAA) up in Rohnert Park on Wednesday. The Otters fall to 8-7-1 (3-7 CCAA).
The only goal scored by either team Sunday was officially ruled an "own goal". In the seventh minute,
Cassidy Overstreet served a pass into the box where it was headed straight up, fell straight down on the ground and back up in the air, and on CSUMB goalkeeper Alyson Schade's attempt to punch it out, she knocked it into the net for the own goal.
It would stay 1-0 in favor of CPP the rest of the way, but not without chances by CSUMB to tie the game up. The closest attempt came in the 41st minute when Maya Richardson got passed CPP goalkeeper
Sydney Williams and took a shot on the run, but a CPP defender knocked it away at the last second. Then, in the 80th minute, CSUMB's Sierra Levy, who also played goalkeeper for 32 minutes of the contest, banged a shot off the crossbar, but it would bounce back out and CPP would clear it of danger.
The Broncos ended the contest with the edge in shot attempts (17-9). Williams made three saves for CPP in the net while a trio of CSUMB goalkeepers combined for nine saves.
Cal Poly Pomona will take on Sonoma State Wednesday at 3:00 pm in Rohnert Park to wrap up the regular season.
