SEATTLE, Wash. -- BJ Standley scored a team-high 16 points, but the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team came up short against Azusa Pacific in the 2019-20 season opener at the Sodexo Classic, hosted by Seattle Pacific at Brougham Pavilion in Seattle, Wash.
Neither team led by more than five points at any point in the first half, but the Broncos (0-1) went into the intermission with the 31-28 lead. However, the Cougars (1-0) opened the second half on a 14-0 run to take a 42-31 lead with 15:53 to play in regulation.
CPP later responded and a Standley three-pointer with 3:44 left gave the Broncos a 57-56 lead with under four minutes to go, but APU regained the lead for the next three minutes before
Riley Schaefer scored a layup with 29 seconds remaining to again give the Broncos a one-point lead at 62-61. However, APU's Brennan Rymer hit a three-pointer 15 seconds later, then the Cougars hit two more free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Standley was the only Broncos player in double-figures as
Justin Young chipped in with nine points. Schaefer,
William Christmas and
Phoenix Shackelford each had eight points.
Cal Poly Pomona will play host Seattle Pacific Saturday night at 7:30 pm in Seattle.
