ARCATA, Calif. -- Riley Schaefer scored a team-high 16 points and three others scored in double-figures as the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team dominated Humboldt State 82-65 on Thursday night at Lumberjack Arena in Arcata.
The Broncos have won eight straight games, rising to 15-5 overall and 13-5 in the CCAA, still remaining in third place in the standings, one-half game behind UC San Diego (13-4) and a full game behind leader Cal State East Bay (14-4). The Lumberjacks fall to 15-10 overall and into a tie for sixth place in the conference with a 9-8 CCAA mark.
Four CPP players scored in double-figures, led by Schaefer's 16, 12 of which came from three-point range.
William Christmas chipped in with 13, followed by 11 from both
Jordan Ogundiran and
Phoenix Shackelford.
The Broncos enjoyed their best shooting night of the season, connecting on 65.9 percent of their attempts (27 of 41). In fact, it was the first time that CPP shot better than 60 percent since Nov. 21, 2015 when they hit 63.3 percent from the floor in a 77-50 win. The last time the Broncos shot better than 65.9 percent was back on Feb. 2, 2013 when they hit on 68.1 percent of their attempts (32 of 47) in an 89-76 victory over Chico State.
On the other end of the floor, CPP held Humboldt to just 39.6 percent on 21 of 53 shooting. All 12 Lumberjacks that saw action Thursday night scored at least two points, but their leading scorer, Calvin Young II, was held to just 10 points.
Cal Poly Pomona returns to action Saturday night against Chico State at Acker Gymnasium in Chico. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.
