LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team suffered a pair of losses to No. 14 UC San Diego Saturday by scores of 6-0 and 9-2 at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla.
The Broncos (8-6 overall) saw their six-game win streak snapped in falling to 6-2 in the CCAA. The Tritons, meanwhile, snapped a four-game skid, rising to 9-4 (4-4 CCAA).
Ryon Knowles,
Jeremy Conant and
Nic Hernandez combined to go 7 for 18 at the plate (.389) in the doubleheader while the rest of the team went 2 for 38. The Broncos, who lead the CCAA in doubles, home runs and total bases, were held by Triton pitching to just nine singles in the 16 innings on Saturday, scoring the only two runs in the top of the first inning of game two. In that frame,
Brennan McKenzie brought home Hernandez before Knowles scored on a throwing error, giving CPP the early 2-0 lead in the series finale. However, UCSD responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning and four more in the third to put the game out of reach.
Both CPP starting pitchers Saturday were tagged with the loss;
Austin Isenhart (1-2) worked the first 6.1 innings of game one, allowing four runs on seven hits, striking out four, as
Dylan Francis (1-2) went 2.1 innings giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
Cal Poly Pomona will return home Thursday to host Cal State L.A. for game one of a four-game series, beginning at 6:00 pm. The teams will then play a doubleheader Friday in Los Angeles at 3:00 pm before wrapping up the series back in Pomona on Saturday with a single game starting at 1:00 pm.
