POMONA -- Logan Gopperton and
Ryon Knowles each had a double and an RBI, and
Dante Palacio went 2 for 4 with an RBI of his own, but the No. 16 Cal Poly Pomona baseball team suffered an 11-3 loss to visiting Hope International Saturday afternoon at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
The Broncos fall to 2-4 on the season while the Royals improve to 7-1.
Hope International jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the second inning, one run in the third and another in the sixth before CPP could get on the board in the sixth inning. In the sixth,
Nic Hernandez led off the frame reaching on an error, then moved to second base on a sacrifice by
Drew Cowley. Knowles delivered a double down the right field line on the first pitch he saw to score Hernandez, then Gopperton brought home Knowles with a double of his own three pitches later to make it 4-2 in favor of HIU.
However, the Royals went on to score seven runs over the final three innings to run away with the victory. The third and final Broncos run came home in the bottom of the ninth when Palacio scored
Patrick Vizcaino.
Cal Poly Pomona will now jump right into conference play, which begins Thursday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. First pitch in Carson is set for 2:00 pm.
