POMONA -- Brennan McKenzie went 2 for 5 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, but the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team suffered an 8-2 loss to No. 20 San Francisco State on Friday night at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
The Broncos fall below .500 at 11-12 overall and are 9-8 in the CCAA. The Gators, meanwhile, remain unbeaten this season at 10-0-1 (8-0 CCAA).
SF State got to CPP starter
Tim Holdgrafer early, putting up two runs in the top of the first, and three more in the top of the second. The Broncos' offense tried to keep things close with a run in the bottom of the first and another in the second, but that's all they could muster the rest of the way. The Gators piled on two more runs in the sixth and another in the eighth for the 8-2 win to open the four-game series.
Holdgrafer (5-2) went 5.2 innings and scattered 10 hits, giving up seven runs (all earned) while striking out just three.
Jeremy Taylor came out of the pen and had a strong three innings of work, allowing one run on two hits, fanning three.
Offensively, in addition to McKenzie's efforts,
Ryon Knowles went 2 for 3 with a double and a RBI,
Angel Ortiz went 3 for 4 and
Christian Moya went 2 for 4 with a run scored.
For San Francisco State, Harley Lopez had a huge game, going 2 for 4 with a double, home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Three other Gators also had two hits each.
Cal Poly Pomona and SF State return to Scolinos Field Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
