ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team lost both games of Sunday's doubleheader against host Sonoma State by scores of 7-4 and 9-5.
With the losses, the Broncos fall to 13-17 overall and 11-13 in the CCAA. The Seawolves rise to 12-13 (10-11 CCAA).
In Sunday's opener, Sonoma plated three runs in the first two innings to take an early 3-0 lead before a Ryan Knowles sacrifice fly in the third inning and a
Drew Cowley steal home in the fourth cut the CPP deficit to 3-2.
However, the Seawolves would come back with a run in the fourth, two more in the sixth and a run in the eighth to lead 7-2.Â
Nic Hernandez got two runs back in the top of the ninth on a two-run home run to right field, but that was it, as the Broncos fell 7-4.Â
Austin Isenhart (3-4) was tagged with the loss in the game, going the first five innings and allowing four runs on nine hits. It overshadowed a 4 for 5 performance at the plate by Hernandez, who accounted for half of the Broncos' eight hits in the contest.Â
Angel Ortiz went 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored.
In the series finale between the two teams, Sonoma State jumped out in front right off the bat, plating four runs in the bottom of the first on CPP starter
Mitch Hart (0-1). The Broncos came right back with four runs of their own in the second inning, thanks to a two-RBI double by
Patrick Vizcaino and RBI singles from Cowley and
Brennan McKenzie.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the second, Hart walked the first batter of the inning, then hit the next before being lifted for
Troy Bethell. The Seawolves eventually scored three runs in the inning to take the lead for good. CPP got a run back in the third on an Ortiz RBI single, but that would be the extent of the offense for the visitors the rest of the way. SSU went on to plate runs in the fifth and seventh for the 9-5 final.
McKenzie, Knowles,
Cesar Lopez, Ortiz,
Logan Gopperton and Cowley all had two hits for the Broncos in the contest. Â
Cal Poly Pomona returns home Friday to host Cal State East Bay in a four-game series at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
