POMONA -- Patrick Flynn went 4 for 5 with a double, a home run and five RBI, powering the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team to an impressive 11-6 victory over Cal State East Bay on Friday in the first game of a four-game set at Scolinos Field in Pomona this weekend.
The Broncos improve to 14-17 overall and 12-13 in the CCAA while the Pioneers fall to 9-17 (6-14 CCAA).
Flynn was a triple short of the cycle, singling in the first and second inning, doubling in the fourth, then smashing a no-doubt, three-run blast into the trees beyond the left field fence in the eighth. In all, the Broncos scattered 14 hits in the contest with all nine starters in the lineup recording at least a single.
Brennan McKenzie and
Drew Cowley had two hits each, and
Cesar Lopez and
Matt Manskar each had two RBI.
On the mound,
Tim Holdgrafer improved to 6-2, going six and a thirds innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits, striking out five in his winning effort.
Chris Burnette came on in relief and went the rest of the way (2.2 innings), giving up the final Cal State East Bay run in the ninth.
It was the Broncos to jump out in front early, plating three runs in the first and three more in the second to take a large 6-0 lead after two innings. The Pioneers chipped away, and even pulled two within two runs at 7-5 after a three-run sixth inning, but that's as close as they would get, thanks to a four-run eighth by CPP, including the three-run home run by Flynn to cap the victory.
Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State East Bay returns to Scolinos Field Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
