CPP Swept By Pioneers In Saturday Twinbill

POMONA -- The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team lost twice on Saturday to visiting Cal State East Bay by scores of 7-3 and 5-2 on a warm day at Scolinos Field in Pomona.

The Broncos fall to 14-19 overall and sit in eighth place in the CCAA at 12-15.  The Pioneers rise to 11-17 (8-14 CCAA).

In the opener, CPP broke the scoreless tie in its first at bat, thanks to a Ryon Knowles single up the middle, scoring Brennan McKenzie.  However, CSUEB scored a run in each of the next two innings to lead 2-1 before the Broncos evened things up at 2-2 in the bottom of the third, thanks to a balk by East Bay pitcher Jacob Nelson that allowed Knowles to score from third base.

The Pioneers put another run on the board in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a three-run lead, 5-2, through five innings.  Nic Hernandez got a run back in the sixth with a fielder's choice RBI, scoring Angel Ortiz, but that would be it for the Broncos offensively the rest of the way.  The Pioneers scored insurance runs in the seventh and again in the ninth to secure the 7-3 win and snap their 10-game losing streak.

Knowles and Cesar Lopez both had two hits in the game, but CPP was outhit 15-8.  Troy Bethell got the loss on the mound, falling to 0-2 on the year after allowing five runs on nine hits in four innings of work.

In game two, both teams got a run home in the first inning, but Cal State East Bay came back with two runs in the second to lead 3-1.  Another two runs came home for CSUEB in the top of the fourth for the 5-1 advantage before CPP got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a defensive miscue in left field.  Pioneers' starter Brian Martinez went the distance and shut down the Broncos offense the final three innings to earn the complete game win, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits, striking out two.

Dylan Francis (3-5) got the loss for CPP, going four innings and scattering seven hits for five runs (four earned) and a strikeout.  Drew Atherton worked the final three innings and faced the minimum number of batters (9) in an impressive outing out of the bullpen.

The Broncos outhit the Pioneers, 8-7, in game two, two hits apiece coming off the bats of McKenzie, Hernandez and Lopez.

Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State East Bay warp up the four-game series with a single game Sunday in Pomona, beginning at Noon.
