Broncos Rally In Late To Salvage Series Split

POMONA -- Trailing by three runs, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth to secure an 8-4 victory over Cal State East Bay on Sunday afternoon at Scolinos Field in Pomona.

The Broncos salvage a series split, rising to 15-19 overall and 13-15 in the CCAA.  The Pioneers fell to 11-18 (8-15 CCAA).

In the bottom of the first, the Broncos took the early lead on a fielder's choice RBI by Cesar Lopez, scoring Brennan McKenzie, but the Pioneers knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, then plated three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.

It was in the bottom of the sixth that the momentum swung in favor of the hosts.  Initially called out at first base on a close play at first top lead off the inning, Lopez was granted the base after an umpire conversation, to which CPP began to pour it on.  Nick Peifer walked, then after a pitching change, Logan Gopperton singled to load the bases before Drew Cowley delivered a two-run double down the right field line.  Dante Palacio was intentionally walked to again load the bases before Angel Ortiz scored Gopperton on a sacrifice fly to knot the game at 4-4.  Then, on an 0-1 count, McKenzie doubled down the left field line to score Cowley and Palacio for the 6-4 lead.

Palacio recorded a RBI single in the seventh, then Lopez had a RBI single in the eighth to contribute to the come-from-behind 8-4 win for the Broncos.

McKenzie ended the day going 3 for 5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.  Lopez was 2 for 5 with two RBI and Peifer was 2 for 3 with a run scored.  Palacio was 2 for 3 with a RBI and Cowley brought home a pair of runs.

Outside of the three run sixth, Austin Isenhart (4-4) was dominating on the mound.  He went eight innings, giving up the four runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out three.  Darin May came on in the ninth and struck out two to close the door.

Cal Poly Pomona will hit the road next weekend for a four-game series at Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside.  The first game of the series on Friday is set for a 6:00 pm start time.
