#20 Broncos Gallop Past 'Jacks To CCAA Semis

POMONA -- William Christmas, Jordan Ogundiran and Justin Young all scored in double figures, and the defense was again suffocating, as the No. 20 Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team blew past visiting Humboldt State, 85-67, in the First Round of the 2019 CCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Tuesday night at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.

The top-seeded Broncos have won 13 straight games to improve to 20-5 overall and will take on No. 5 seed Cal State L.A. in semifinal action Friday night at Pioneer Gymnasium in Hayward.  Tipoff is scheduled for 8:05 pm.  The Golden Eagles upset No. 4 seed San Francisco State in overtime also in the First Round on Tuesday, 81-76, up in San Francisco to advance to Friday's semifinal.

The eighth-seeded Lumberjacks saw their season come to an end with a 17-14 overall record.

The contest was never in doubt for the Broncos, who shot 43.5 percent as a team (27 of 62) and held the Lumberjacks to just 36.2 percent (21 of 58).  Humboldt did pull within single digits late in regulation, but CPP went the final five minutes on a 17-6 run, 10 of the points on free throws, to secure the 18-point win.

Christmas led the way with 19 points, including a perfect 11 for 11 at the free throw line, to go along with eight rebounds.  Ogundiran netted 17 points with five assists and four rebounds, and Young chipped in with 15 points.

For Humboldt State, Jamarlin Jackson led the way for the 'Jacks with 14 points.

In other action around the CCAA, No. 2 UC San Diego demolished No. 7 seed Cal State San Bernardino, 98-69, in La Jolla.  The Tritons (23-7) will play No. 3 Cal State East Bay in the other men's semifinal matchup Friday in Hayward at 5:35 pm.  The Pioneers beat No. 6 Cal State Dominguez Hills, 68-54, Tuesday in Hayward.
