Broncos Advance To Semis In Defeat Of Sonoma

POMONA -- Monica Todd nearly pulled off a triple-double, scoring 15 points to go along with nine rebounds and eight steals, as the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team got past Sonoma State, 66-59, in the First Round of the 2018 CCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Tuesday night at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.

The No. 2 seed Broncos improve to 24-4 overall and will take on No. 6 seed Cal State East Bay in semifinal action Friday afternoon at Pioneer Gymnasium in Hayward.  Tipoff is scheduled for 2:35 pm.  The Pioneers upset No. 3 seed Humboldt State also in the First Round on Tuesday, 72-62 up in Arcata to advance to Friday's semifinal.

The No. 7 seed Seawolves saw their season come to an end at 11-15 and are now 0-23 all-time (regular and postseason) against CPP in games played in Pomona.

CPP got off to a fast start, going up by as much as 20 points (34-14) with a little more than two minutes remaining in the second quarter.  The Broncos lead extended to 23 points (46-23) with 4:30 to play in the third, but the Seawolves got hot themselves, going on a 26-7 run over the next 10 minutes to pull within just three points at 55-52 with 3:27 left in regulation.  That's as close as SSU would get however, as CPP went 11 for 14 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win.

In addition to Todd's efforts, Jordyn Shane recorded 13 points, eight rebounds, six steals and five assists in her final home game as a Bronco.

For Sonoma State, Kylie Kiech scored a game-high 19 points and Ugochi Anudokem, the team's leading scorer, was held to six points but corralled 19 rebounds.

In other action around the CCAA, No. 1 UC San Diego demolished No. 8 seed San Francisco State, 87-36, in La Jolla.  The Tritons (27-0) will play No. 4 Cal State San Marcos in the other women's semifinal matchup Friday in Hayward at 12:05 pm.  The Cougars beat No. 5 Cal State Dominguez Hills, 75-69, Tuesday in San Marcos.
