Broncos Take Series After Winning 3-2 Thriller

POMONA -- Angel Ortiz went 2 for 3, including a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning which proved to be the difference in Sunday's 3-2 nailbiting victory for the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team over visiting Stanislaus State at Scolinos Field in Pomona.

With the victory, the Broncos (20-22 overall) took three out of four from the Warriors (23-17 overall) to keep pace in the CCAA playoff race with two weeks left in the regular season.  As it stands now, CPP has an 18-18 mark in league play and is in seventh place, one-half game behind next weekend's opponent Chico State (15-14), which is in sixth place.

The Top 6 in the final regular season standings by way of winning percentage in CCAA contests will qualify for the CCAA Baseball Tournament on May 8-11 at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton.

On Sunday, the Broncos needed just five hits to edge the Warriors, who are fourth in the standings at 19-15, one-half game ahead of fifth-place Sonoma State (18-15 CCAA).  Stanislaus State did take the early lead with a RBI single in the fourth off of CPP starter Jeremy Taylor, who went 4.1 innings and allowed five hits and just the one run with three strikeouts.

It wasn't until the sixth inning that CPP rallied for all three of its runs, the first coming off the bat of Cesar Lopez, who laced a pinch-hit RBI double to right center, scoring Ryon Knowles to knot the game at 1-1.  Three batters later, Ortiz delivered the go-ahead double that scored Patrick Vizcaino and Lopez for the 3-1 lead.

From then on, both Ben Mora (1-3) and Darin May shut down the Stanislaus lineup, with the exception of a leadoff solo home run in the top of the ninth that got the Warriors within one run.  However, May, who notched his fifth save of the year, induced a fly out, a pop up and a strikeout to secure the thrilling 3-2 win.

The winning pitcher, Mora, worked 3.2 innings, allowing just two hits, striking out five before giving way to May in the ninth.

In addition to Ortiz's two hits, Lopez, Vizcaino and Nick Peifer each had a hit as well.

Just eight games remain in the 2019 regular season for Cal Poly Pomona.  The Broncos will next travel to Chico for a four-game series against Chico State, which begins Thursday at 6:00 pm.
