CHICO, Calif. -- Tim Holdgrafer went eight innings and allowed just one unearned run on five hits, striking out six, and Nick Peifer went 2 for 3 with two triples and a RBI, as the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team secured a huge 3-1 victory Thursday night to open the four-game series at Chico State.

With the victory, the Broncos (21-22) move into sixth place in the CCAA at 19-18, one-half game ahead of Chico State (19-16, 15-15 CCAA).

Peifer and Ryon Knowles supplied the only hits for CPP on the night -- Peifer's two triples along with a 3 for 3 night for Knowles, who posted a pair of doubles.  Both also scored all three runs.  Patrick Vizcaino supplied the first run of the game in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly scoring Peifer.

Chico State game back in the fourth to tie the game at 1-1, but then Peifer's RBI triple in the sixth scored Knowles for the go-ahead run, which would hold up as the eventual game-winner.  Knowles scored an insurance run on a fielding error in the eighth to account for the third and final run of the night for the Broncos.

Meanwhile, Holdgrafer earned his eighth win of the season, rising to 8-3 with an eight-inning, five-hit effort, giving up the one unearned run in the fourth.  Darin May came on in the ninth and retired all three batters he faced for his sixth save of the year.

Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State return to the field Friday at 12:00 pm for a doubleheader.
