Baseball Settles For Friday Split At Chico

CHICO, Calif. -- After falling 15-2 in first of two games Friday, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team responded with a 4-1 victory in game two to settle for a doubleheader split with Chico State at Nettleton Stadium in Chico.

The Broncos (22-23 overall) remain in sixth place in the CCAA at 20-19, still one-half game ahead of the Wildcats (20-17, 16-16 CCAA).

In Friday's opener, Patrick Vizcaino got the scoring started with a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning, but Chico rallied back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.  Nic Hernandez belted a solo home run in the fifth to knot the game at 2-2, but from that point on, Chico plated 13 runs, including eight in the eighth inning alone, to secure the convincing 15-2 win.

In the nightcap, the Broncos took advantage of six Wildcat errors to win 4-1.  Two runs came home in the top of the third when Logan Gopperton and Brennan McKenzie scored thanks to a pair of throwing errors by the pitcher.  Chico again came back with a run in its next bat to come within a run at 2-1, but CPP runs in the sixth and the seventh allowed the visitors to sneak by Chico for the three-run win.

Cal Poly Pomona will go for the series win -- and the upper hand in the CCAA standings -- when game four of the four-game series with Chico State commences Saturday at 11:00 am in Chico.
