SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- Nic Hernandez went 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBI and
Austin Isenhart went eight and a thirds innings, allowing three runs on seven hits to go along with six strikeouts as the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team edged Cal State San Marcos, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon in San Marcos.
With the win, the Broncos rise to 23-25 overall and move back to .500 in league play at 21-21, jumping back into the No. 6 spot in the CCAA standings, one-half game ahead of Cal State East Bay (19-20 CCAA) in seventh place. It was also head coach
Randy Betten's 300th career win, as he is now 300-189 in nine seasons at CPP. The host Cougars fell to 23-25 overall and 19-23 in the CCAA.
Brennan McKenzie got the day started early for the Broncos, hitting a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing
Nic Hernandez to score for the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. The one-run lead would hold until the bottom of the third when CSUSM scored twice on CPP starter
Austin Isenhart on a two-RBI single. In the top of the fifth, CPP regained the lead with three runs in the frame, one on a RBI single by
Ryon Knowles, scoring
Nick Peifer, followed by a two-RBI double by Hernandez scoring Knowles and
Logan Gopperton to put the visitors up 4-2.
Cal State San Marcos managed another run in the bottom of the fifth to pull within a run, but Isenhart (7-5) didn't allow another run the rest of the way. CPP got an important insurance run in the seventh on a RBI single by Knowles, scoring
Drew Cowley, making it 5-3 in favor of the Broncos.
Isenhart went out to start the ninth inning, but after giving up a one-out double and the tying run coming to the plate, Betten elected to go with
Darin May, who struck out the final two batters to end the game and earn his seventh save of the year, the third-most in the CCAA this season.
Hernandez and Knowles each had a pair of hits and a pair of RBI for the Broncos on Saturday to lead the way offensively. Both of Hernandez's hits went for two bases.
The two teams will head north to Pomona to wrap up the regular season Sunday with a doubleheader at Scolinos Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm. It will also be Senior Day as the Broncos will honor their 14 seniors in a special pre-game ceremony that will start at 12:15 pm.
