POMONA -- Nick Peifer and
Brennan McKenzie combined for eight hits, including two home runs, and eight RBI in the doubleheader on Sunday, lifting the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team to a pair of victories over Cal State San Marcos and a berth into the 2019 CCAA Championship Tournament on the final day of the regular season at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
The Broncos (25-25 overall) rise to 23-21 in the CCAA and currently sit in sixth place in the conference standings. Several teams around the CCAA still have makeup games to play next weekend to decide the final seeding for the conference tournament scheduled for May 8-12 at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton. Stay tuned to

The Cougars saw their season come to an end Sunday at 23-27 overall and 19-25 in league action.
It will be the sixth consecutive trip to the CCAA postseason tournament for CPP, and the eighth appearance in the last nine seasons.
After the Broncos honored their 14 seniors in a special pre-game ceremony Sunday, CPP came out with a convincing 5-1 victory behind the arms of
Drew Atherton (2-1) and
Ben Mora (first save of the season), allowing one run on eight hits with six strikeouts between the two. Atherton went the first six innings before Mora came on to finish the job. The only CSUSM run came home in the fifth inning on a two-out RBI single by Anthony Rodriguez.
Meanwhile, Peifer suppled the offense, going 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBI. Three others recorded two base hits --
Patrick Vizcaino, McKenzie and
Cesar Lopez. In all, the Broncos pounded out 12 hits in the opener.
In the nightcap, both teams traded punches in the second and third innings, but the Broncos blew the game wide open with five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 9-3 lead, the final three runs coming home on McKenzie's three-run bomb that snuck just inside the left field foul pole and into the trees beyond the outfield fence.Â
Chris Burnette (1-1) got the win in relief after taking over for
Dylan Francis in the fourth.
