Broncos Upset Top Seed Tritons In CCAA Opener

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL | ARCHIVED VIDEO BROADCAST

STOCKTON, Calif. --
Austin Isenhart tossed seven strong innings and Nick Peifer went 2 for 4 with a RBI as the No. 6 seed Cal Poly Pomona baseball team upset top-seed and No. 4-ranked UC San Diego, 3-2, in the opening game of the 2019 CCAA Baseball Tournament Wednesday at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton.

The Broncos rise to 26-25 and will next play Thursday at 3:00 pm against the loser of tonight's game between No. 3 seed Chico State and No. 4 seed Stanislaus State. The Tritons, who are No. 1 in the West Region according to this week's NCAA Division II Regional Rankings, fall to 35-11 and play an elimination game Thursday at 11:00 am against the loser of the upcoming game between No. 2 seed Cal State Monterey Bay and No. 5 seed San Francisco State.

See what head coach Randy Betten, Isenhart and Peifer had to say about Wednesday's victory HERE.

UC San Diego got on the board first with a solo home run to left center field by this year's CCAA Most Valuable Player Shay Whitcomb.  Isenhart then settled down, retiring 14 of the next 16 batters, only allowing a single and a walk (in separate innings) during that span. However, UCSD's RJ Prince delivered a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning to take a 2-0 lead.  Whitcomb added a single after Prince's home run, but Isenhart retired the next six batters he faced before being lifted to start the eighth.

The Broncos made their comeback in the top of the seventh when Patrick Vizcaino drew a one-out walk and Cesar Lopez followed with a base hit to put runners on first and second.  A wild pitch moved the runners up 90 feet, then Peifer blooped a single to right field to score Vizcaino to make it 2-1.  In the next at bat, Drew Cowley grounded out to second base, but allowed Lopez to score to knot the game at 2-2.

In the eighth, Logan Gopperton, who walked to lead off the inning, came around to score on a fielder's choice by Brennan McKenzie to give CPP the 3-2 lead.  From then on, Ben Mora and Darin May came up big out of the bullpen, shutting down the Tritons lineup the rest of the way to secure the one-run victory.  Isenhart improved to 8-5 this season while May earned his eighth save.

CPP managed just three hits in the game off of UCSD starter Noah Conlon (five innings) and reliever Ted Stuka (four innings), two from Peifer and the other from Lopez.
