POMONA -- The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team began its defense of the conference title, opening up the CCAA slate with an upset 3-2 victory over No. 15 Cal State San Bernardino Thursday night at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.
The Broncos have won two straight matches, rising to 2-3-1 overall and are now 1-0 in the CCAA. The Coyotes, who entered the contest unbeaten, fall to 3-1-1 (0-1 CCAA).
See what head coach
Matt O'Sullivan and
Jimmie Villalobos had to say about the victory here:
Omer Green didn't waste any time getting the Broncos on the scoreboard first, sneaking the ball just inside the left post at 5:42 after a corner kick in by
Ori Kenett, then a header from
Jordan Jackmon that found Green inside the box.
After the Coyotes evened the score in the 16th minute, Villalobos fired a rocket from 20 yards out that beat CSUSB keeper Jacob Huber into the left side of the net for the 2-1 lead at 28:38.
It would stay 2-1 until the 74th minute when
Eduardo Faria possessed the ball with his back to the net, spun around, beat two defenders and blasted a shot into the left sidewall of the net to put CPP up 3-1.
The Coyotes would cut their deficit to one goal at 77:36 when Kevin Aguilar scored his second goal of the match on a penalty kick, but that would be the extent of the offense as the host Broncos held on for the 3-2 victory despite being outshot 15-9, including 11-1 in the second half.
Cal Poly Pomona will hit the road next Friday (Oct. 4) to take on UC San Diego in La Jolla. Kickoff from the Triton Soccer Stadium is set for 7:00 pm.
