POMONA -- Cesar Lopez went 3 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored, including a run-scoring single in the seventh that tied the ballgame at 3-3, but the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team saw its six-game win streak come to an end after surrendering three runs in the ninth in falling 6-3 to visiting Point Loma in non-conference action Wednesday night at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
The Broncos fall to 8-5 while the Sea Lions rise to 6-7.
In a mid-week contest that saw 13 combined pitchers between the two teams, it was Point Loma to strike first on offense, scoring twice in the third inning and one more time in the fourth to make it 3-0.
In the fourth, Cal Poly Pomona scored on a double steal when
Drew Cowley swiped second, allowing
Brennan McKenzie to score from third to cut the PLNU lead to 3-1. In the sixth, Derek Marshall, Jr. whistled a bases-laoded single into center field, but only Lopez scored as the Sea Lions center fielder Izayah Alvarez made a diving attempt at a catch, but came up empty, forcing the CPP runners to move up only one base, making it 3-2 Point Loma. Still with just one out and the bases jammed, PLNU's Nicholas Cornelius got the final two outs of the inning to leave the bases loaded of Broncos.
In the seventh,
Ryon Knowles doubled to lead off the inning, then scored on Lopez's single through the left side to knot the game at 3-all.

The Broncos had an excellent chance at taking the lead in the eighth, loading the bases with one out, but Sea Lions ace Zack Noll came on in relief to get the final two outs and, again, strand three CPP runners on base heading to the ninth.
It was in the ninth inning that Point Loma came up with the big bats, scoring on a RBI single by Jarret Lindsay, followed by a two-run double by Scott Anderson for the 6-3 advantage. Noll came back out on the mound for PLNU in the bottom of the ninth and retired the side in order to win his second game of the season.
The Broncos posted 10 hits to the Sea Lions' 14. Lopez (three hits) and Marshall, Jr. (two hits) each had multi-hit games. Knowles extended his hit streak to 11 games and his reached-base streak to 13. McKenzie, who went 1 for 5 on Wednesday, now has an eight-game hit streak, and Lopez has reached base in nine straight contests.
Will Rudy (0-1) got the loss on the hill for the Broncos, giving up the go-ahead run in the ninth.
Cal Poly Pomona steps back into CCAA play on Friday with a 6 p.m. game at Cal State San Bernardino.
