SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Gavin Velasquez tossed seven innings of shutout ball, allowing just four hits, one walk while striking out six, and both
Christian Moya and
Nick Peifer hit solo home runs as the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team notched a 2-0 victory over host Cal State San Bernardino Friday night at Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino.
The Broncos rise to 9-5 overall and 7-2 in the CCAA. The Coyotes fell to 5-10 (2-7 CCAA).
Velasquez continued to dominate on the mound, and Friday, he was awarded his first win in a CPP uniform. He gave up just four hits, and the only time a CSUSB baserunner made it beyond first base was in the bottom of the first when Deshawn Johnson stole second. He gave way to
Jeremy Taylor in the eighth and
Eric Romo in the ninth who both retired the side in order to secure the victory.
Meanwhile, the Broncos offense got runs from Moya in the fifth and Peifer in the sixth, both homering to left field for the only runs in the contest. In all, CPP totaled six hits, four off of CSUSB starter Blake Timm (0-4), and two off of reliever John Pfeffer; Timm gave up both home runs.
Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino returns to Fiscalini Field Saturday at Noon, before wrapping up the series Sunday with a doubleheader at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
