Coyotes Stun Broncos In Ninth Inning Rally

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Despite leading by two heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team surrendered three runs and lost 8-7 to Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday afternoon at Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino.

The Broncos fall to 9-6 overall and 7-3 in the CCAA while the Coyotes rise to 6-10 (3-7 CCAA).

McKenzie got the ball rolling almost right off the bat -- pun intended -- smashing a three run home run to left field in the top of the first inning to take the lead before CSUSB came to bat.  The Coyotes chipped away, scoring two runs in the fourth on a two-RBI single by Andrew Talkington, before GJ Hurst launched a three-run homer in the fifth to make it 5-3 in favor of the hosts.

The Broncos came right back with three runs in the sixth thanks to a RBI double by McKenzie, followed by a bases loaded fielding error off the bat of Drew Cowley that allowed Nick Peifer to score as CPP regained the lead 6-5.  In the eighth, Christian Moya brought home an insurance run with a sacrifice fly scoring McKenzie as the Broncos took a 7-5 lead.

However, in the ninth, the Coyotes got two singles to lead off, then the following two batters were hit with a Steven Ordorica pitch, pushing a run home to make it 7-6 CPP.  Eric Romo came in with the bases loaded and induced a double play, but the lead runner was able to come home for the tying run.  With two outs, Deshawn Johnson reached on an error by Matt Manskar at third base, bringing home the winning run.

Drew Atherton got the start for CPP and went five innings, allowing seven hits and five runs (all earned), striking out three.  Connor Tousignant pitched a scoreless inning in the sixth before giving way to Ordorica and Romo (1-2) the final 2.2 innings.

Offensively, McKenzie went 3 for 5 with a double, home run, four RBI and three runs scored, Ryon Knowles went 3 for 6 with a double and two runs, and Peifer was 2 for 6 with two runs scored, combining for eight of the 13 Bronco base hits.

The Coyotes recorded 11 hits, led by the 3 for 4 day from catcher Sergio Rey.

Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino wraps up the four-game series Sunday with a doubleheader at Scolinos Field in Pomona beginning at 1:00 p.m.
