No. 25 Broncos Open CCAA With Draw

After breaking into the NCAA Division II rankings this week, No. 25-ranked Cal Poly Pomona had to dig deep to grab a 1-1 draw on the road at Sonoma State University to open CCAA action.

The Broncos sit at 3-2-2 overall and 0-0-1 in conference, while the Seawolves boast a 4-3-1, 0-0-1 record.

SSU struck first in the 23rd minute to take an early 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, however, Paul Henschke scored his seventh goal of the season, converting a penalty kick in the 33rd minute for the equalizer.

The Broncos kept pushing and poured on the offense in the second half. CPP out-shot SSU 8-to-4 in the second half, putting half of them on frame but couldn't find the back of the net.

Deadlocked at 1-1, the two teams went into extra time looking for a golden goal to end the game. Oscar Griehsel Facey look like he might have found it in the 99th minute, but the Seawolf goalkeeper just got his hands on it to keep the two teams even at 1-1.

As the clock wound down, the Broncos kept fighting and got another good look with just one minute left in the second extra period. Jerry Ramirez fired off a shot on goal, but once again the SSU goalkeeper came up big to force the Broncos to settle for a tie.

Cal Poly Pomona continues its trip up North with a Sunday matchup at San Francisco State. The Broncos and Gators are set to kick off at 2:00 p.m.
