No. 21 Ranked Broncos Suffer First Loss at Cal State LA

LOS ANGELES – The 21st-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team saw its 11-match, season-opening win streak snapped at the hands of host Cal State LA in four sets in California Collegiate Athletic Association action on Friday evening at University Gym.

The Broncos, whose 11 straight wins to open the season was the second-longest streak in school history, came into the match as the fourth-efficient offensive team in the NCAA Division II with a .300 hitting percentage. Cal Poly Pomona (11-1, 4-1 CCAA) was held to a .165 clip by Cal State LA (8-4, 3-1 CCAA), marking the first time this season the Broncos were held to a hitting percentage below .220.

The first two sets were very tightly contested, with Cal Poly Pomona escaping seven ties and two lead changes in the first with consecutive points to break a 24-all tie with a kill by sophomore Daisy Duke and a combined block by Duke and fellow sophomore Kaitlan Tucker. That spurt gave the Broncos a familiar 1-0 match lead over the Golden Eagles.

The tides began to turn on Cal Poly Pomona in the second set, however. A 5-0 scoring run by Cal State LA broke a 14-14 tie and was the third and final lead change in a frame that also saw 10 tie scores early. The Broncos, who hit a match-best .263 in the second set, did close to within 24-22 before the Golden Eagles claimed the set on a kill by Alejandra Negron.

Another extensive run – this time an 8-0 streak – helped Cal State LA take a commanding lead in the third set, and Cal Poly Pomona was never able to fully recover. The Broncos did close to within two at 14-12, but the Golden Eagles scored 11 of the next 15 points to take the match lead. It marked just the second 2-1 match deficit of the season for Cal Poly Pomona – they defeated Point Loma in five sets on Sept. 9 at Kellogg Arena.

The Broncos led just once in the fourth set, scoring the first point of the frame, before Cal State LA scored seven of the next eight points. Cal Poly Pomona crept to within a three-point deficit three times in the closing stretch before the Golden Eagles finished off the match with a kill by Eliza Cannon.

Three Cal Poly Pomona players reached double figures in kills, led by sophomore Jazmyn Wheeler with 13 kills. Wheeler hit .306 and added 13 digs, while Duke finished with 11 kills and a team-best .321 percentage. Sophomore Jazminn Parrish added 10 kills, and senior setter Kira Zimmerman finished with 39 assists, four aces, and 13 digs. Senior Brynn Sherbert led the Broncos with 20 digs.

Emily Elliott had a match-high 16 kills for Cal State LA, while Karla Santos added 14 and Negron had 10. Santos led all players with 23 digs, and Cannon totaled nine kills and 42 assists for the Golden Eagles.

Cal Poly Pomona will look to start a new win streak on Saturday against Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson starting at 6 p.m. The Broncos will then return home next weekend to face San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay inside Kellogg Arena on Friday (Oct. 8) and Saturday (Oct. 9), respectively.
