Broncos Strike Early to Down Coyotes

POMONA – In an important conference matchup, Cal Poly Pomona took on Cal State San Bernardino Thursday night and came out victorious with a 2-0 win.

The Broncos improve to 6-2-3 overall and 3-0-2 in the CCAA, jumping the Coyotes in the conference standings with the three points to move up to third. The Coyotes drop to 5-3-2, 3-1-1 in conference with their first CCAA loss.

CPP wasted little time finding the back of the net as Paul Henschke scored in the fourth minute off a double assist from Eduardo Faria and Christian Miramontes. Faria laid off a ball to Miramontes running down the left side, allowing him to send in a low cross to the top of the six-yard box. The Coyote goalkeeper dove to try to grab the cross but missed, giving Henschke a wide-open goal.

Twenty minutes later, Faria doubled the Broncos lead after drawing a free kick about 30 yards out. He drove the ball into the box, where it bounced through the defense and past the goalkeeper to give CPP a 2-0 lead.

The Broncos looked like they made tack on another goal with just 10 minutes remaining in the game as the Coyote goalkeeper bobbled a ball in the box, but he managed to scoop up the loose ball before more damage could be done.

Jordan Aldama made four saves to preserve his third shutout of the year.

CPP looks to continue building on its three-game winning streak as it heads to Cal State San Marcos on Sunday, kicking off at 2:00 p.m.
