FRESNO, Calif. — Cal Poly Pomona came out fired up Wednesday night and grabbed a 4-1 win on the road against Fresno Pacific.
With the win, the Broncos improve to 1-1-1 on the year, while the Sunbirds start the year in a 0-1-0 hole.
Less than three minutes into the game, CPP struck gold. After the ball was knocked out of bounds, a Bronco throw in led to
Paul Henschke getting a good look on goal and capitalized off a
Melvyn Perez Cortez assist to put the Broncos up 1-0 early.
The Sunbirds tried to even things up quickly, but
Jordan Aldama made back-to-back saves in the fifth minute to keep FPU off the scoreboard.
In the 12
th minute, the Broncos struck again to double their lead.
Christian Miramontes and
Kraig Bonanken combined to find
Oscar Griehsel Facey in the Sunbirds' defensive third. Facey struck low and hard, sending his shot into the back of the net.
Fifteen minutes later, Henschke scored once again to put his team in front 3-0. After the Sunbirds tried to clear the ball out of their half off a goal kick, Henschke took over control of the ball and placed his shot past the FPU goalkeeper for his second goal of the night.
FPU managed to break the shutout in the 37
th minute, however, to pull back within two, 3-1, before halftime.
The Broncos kept the pressure on and Henschke looked like he might get his first hat trick of the season in the 50
th minute, but the Sunbird goalkeeper made the save to keep the score close.
Neither team could get in behind the other's defense until the 73
rd minute when
Max Laguna found Facey for his second goal of the night, 4-1.
Fresno Pacific pushed late to close the gap, but the Bronco defense was resilient and held onto the 4-1 victory, CPP's first ever win at FPU in four tries.
Aldama made six saves in goal, matching a career-high.
The Broncos continue on the road, taking on Biola on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
