POMONA - A 13-0 fourth-quarter run sent Cal Poly Pomona down to a narrow 65-62 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills in an important California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's basketball matchup Thursday night inside Kellogg Arena.
With the result, CPP falls to 5-10 overall and 4-7 in the CCAA. In rallying for its fourth win in a row, Cal State Dominguez Hills improves to 8-7 overall and 6-4 in league play. The Toros had taken a 78-73 double-overtime decision in this season's first meeting in Carson on Dec. 18, and swept the series for the first time since 2015-16.
The Broncos began with consecutive three-pointers by senior
Ally Bates on their first two possessions, from the right and left wing, respectively, with the opener following a pair of offensive rebounds. A third long-distance make in as many tries by the native of Melbourne, Australia, gave CPP a 10-5 lead. Coming out of the first-quarter media timeout, Bates got her hands on a steal around the nose of the Bronco logo, dribbled into the lane and knocked down the pull-up jumper for 12-7.
The Toros notched the next five points to knot the score for the first time at 12-12. The 7-0 run was bookended by a three-pointer and jumper by Kelsey Bell, the latter giving the guests their first lead of the night at 14-12. Bates then completed her perfect 5-for-5, 14-point opening stanza with another left-wing triple. Two Toro free throws preceded an offensive rebound and right-elbow jumper by
Ciara James that gave CPP back a 17-16 edge after one period. James' basket was the first for the Broncos by someone other than Bates.
The second quarter started with back-to-back
Monica Todd buckets, the latter off her own offensive board. CSUDH got an Asia Jordan layup and Auren Isaacson three around Bates' first miss from the floor to tie the game at 21-21 as CPP called a timeout with 5:26 left in the half.
Two straight Todd steals and fast-break layups by the senior forward pushed the Broncos back ahead at 25-21. The hosts maintained a 30-26 advantage heading into the locker rooms. The teams combined for 26 turnovers during the first half.
Early in the third quarter, Bates drilled her fifth three-pointer of the contest without a miss, to make it 35-30 in favor of CPP. Her next attempt from long range was finally off the mark. A James jumper extended the Bronco lead to its largest of the night to that point, at 41-33, with just over four minutes to go in the third. The sides traded scores until
Rebecca Islas connected for the first time in the game after starting 0-for-4 from the field, for a three that made it a nine-point bulge at 48-39.
A sequence that saw offensive rebounds by Cal Poly Pomona three times on missed free throws, ended with a
Jayda Villareal jumper to make it 51-42. The ledger after three periods read 51-44.
The critical 13-0 run, with an Isaacson triple the exclamation point with 6:14 to go in the game, gave Cal State Dominguez Hills a 59-53 lead as the Broncos committed turnovers on six straight possessions. Bates' sixth three-pointer finally snapped the stretch for CPP approaching the five-minute mark. Moments later, Todd snatched another steal and went coast-to-coast again to close back to within one.
Down 63-60, Todd hit two free throws. The teams then traded two turnovers each before the Toros called a timeout with the ball and 40 ticks showing on the clock. The Broncos forced Isaacson into a turnover, and called a timeout of their own. CSUDH picked off the inbounds pass, however, knocked down a pair from the line, and following another CPP timeout, survived a Bates attempt to win it.
Bates wound up with 22 points to lead all players, shooting 8-of-14 from the field and 6-of-9 from beyond the arc. The six three-pointers were her best output of the season as a first-year transfer. She added eight rebounds, two steals and an assist. James posted her second collegiate double-double and first since her Bronco debut in the opener on Nov. 12, with season highs of 11 points and three assists, and game bests of 13 rebounds and two blocks. Todd had 16 points, six boards and five steals.
Jordan finished with a double-double for the visitors of 15 points and 12 rebounds, to go along with a game-high six steals. Isaacson scored 18 points. Amaya Snowden registered nine points and 10 boards. The final combined turnover tally was 51, with the Toros registering 20 steals.
